Integrated AI safety camera and anchor light launches

AI cameras in a row

Marine AI safety systems provider, Lookout, is integrating its AI vision cameras with a Coast Guard-certified all-around white navigation/anchor light from marine lighting company Lumitec.

Claimed to be an industry-first development, Lookout is addressing the need for both technologies to be mounted at the vessel’s highest point, eliminating installation conflicts while enhancing safety capabilities.lighting

The Lookout camera system uses artificial intelligence to automatically identify and track potential hazards including buoys, debris, logs, other vessels, and marine wildlife. According to the manufacturer, as detection range increases with mounting height, the AI cameras are most effective when installed at the vessel’s highest point—the exact location where Coast Guard regulations require navigation lights to be mounted. Lookout’s integrated solution solves both requirements.

“Our integrated system offers boat owners significant advantages by combining navigation compliance with advanced safety technology,” says David Rose, CEO of Lookout. “The high-mounted night vision camera provides exceptional range and clarity in darkness, while the 360-degree camera delivers complete situational awareness around your vessel. It’s essentially a second set of eyes on the water that never blinks, never gets distracted, and can see things the human eye might miss. The system is available in various colors to complement different vessel designs while providing the safety benefits that modern boating demands.”

“Boston Harbor presents significant navigational challenges with its ferry traffic, commercial vessels, and recreational boaters all sharing congested waterways,” says Paul Sullivan of Powertime Boat Club in Boston, who has been testing the system. “The Lookout system has already identified several potential collision situations that might have been missed without its AI assistance. The integrated navigation light is a brilliant innovation—it simplifies our installation process while ensuring we remain compliant with Coast Guard regulations. It’s like having an extra crew member whose only job is to watch for dangers.”

The integrated system is suitable for commercial and lesiure applications and a wide variety of craft, from 20ft sportboats to 65ft luxury cruisers. This versatility addresses safety needs across the boating spectrum, particularly important given the US Coast Guard’s recent statistics showing that operator inattention and improper lookout remain among the top five contributing factors in boating accidents nationwide.

Lookout says it is also rapidly expanding its dealer and installer network to support growing demand.

Built by a team of AI researchers and 3D visualisation experts, the Lookout system uses advanced computer vision and data fusion to detect and track hazards in the marine environment, providing captains with enhanced situational awareness day or night.
