Lookout – a firm specialising in artificial intelligence for marine safety – has announced an upgrade to its camera and object-recognition platform, with the launch of Lookout 3.0.

Lookout 3.0, which is designed for recreational boats, commercial fleets and professional operators, introduces new features to improve safety, situational awareness and decision-making.

The firm was named the winner of the National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) 2025 Innovation Award for Marine Electronics at IBEX.

The system continuously monitors water using AI to detect hazards, such as buoys, floating debris, small craft and marine mammals.

Lookout 3.0 combines real-time video with charts, AIS, radar, depth data and other NMEA-compatible sensors to provide a 3D augmented-reality display.

The display works across various multifunction displays from brands like Garmin, Furuno, Raymarine, Simrad, and IOS and Android devices. A key feature of the upgraded system is its new 3D aerial view, which provides users with an overhead perspective at adjustable heights.

The system also introduces dynamic 3D shallow fences that rise around the vessel based on its draft and safety buffer, helping visually show shallow zones in real time.

Lookout 3.0 also incorporates ambient light and audio alerts, like the system’s three-tier hazard alerts from awareness to evasive action. Subtle yellow glows indicate a need for attention, while red pulses signal the need for immediate action.

David Rose, CEO of Lookout, says: “With exceptional range, clarity and an interface designed for real captains, not computer scientists, Lookout is redefining what modern marine safety looks like.

“The tools in Lookout 3.0 – aerial view, the risk compass, automated hazard detection and autopilot integration – move us closer to our mission: giving every captain a second set of eyes and reducing accidents on the water.”
